I am a teacher in Wilbraham, Mass. who has been following the developments of the miracle marathon (I have 2 daughters who are running! ). My math department decided to develop the Miracle Math Marathon to correspond to this fundraiser. During the next two weeks we will be doing activities in the classroom and trying to raise funds for Camp Sunshine at the same time. Some of our activities will be to figure out how much 1600 quarters will weigh, figure out how many quarters would be needed to lie them side by side from the math classroom to the principal's office (without using any traditional units of measurement) and also to figure out how many quarters there would be in a mile. The description below was part of a Kickoff that we held on Friday.
The math department wanted to celebrate math month by combining a school-wide math project with community service so we have come up with the Miracle Math Marathon!During the next two weeks, we'll be following the runners via the Internet and we'll be doing math activities that are related to the 1600 mile run. As our community service component, we are challenging the students of Wilbraham Middle School to raise 1600 quarters to match the 1600 miles. We will compete amongst the 4 teams and the winning team will have an ice cream party - complements of Friendly's. Friendly's will also make a donation to Camp Sunshine to match our 1600 quarters!
One other aspect of this project is that we, as a school, are going to try to walk/run 1600 miles during the next 2 weeks! For every mile that the students run/walk and for every quarter that the students bring in, their name will be entered in a raffle and we'll have prizes when the Miracle Math Marathon is over on June 15th.
